The Miracle of Leading with Heart

Hello valued friends, partners, and colleagues,

Kansas City may have been one of the smallest World Cup host cities, yet it captivated the world by delivering one of the tournament’s most unforgettable experiences, proving that size means very little when a city chooses to lead with their heart.

Three years ago, when I began working with Kansas City as its Brand Ambassador for Spain and Latin America, I never imagined I would witness this remarkable city shine on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

Yet here we are.

As I reflect on this World Cup, one question continues to come to mind:

How did one of the tournament’s smallest host cities make one of the biggest impacts?

The answer is beautifully simple.

They led with their heart.

Kansas City’s message, “From the Heart,” is far more than a slogan. It is a way of life.

The kindness, authenticity, generosity, and passion of its people are woven into everything they do. When a community welcomes the world with that much heart, people don’t just notice it.

They feel it, and during this World Cup, the entire world felt it.

The more I learned about Kansas City, the more I realized this success was decades in the making.

Home to the Kansas City Chiefs, multiple-time Super Bowl Champions, and the Kansas City Royals, the city’s sports legacy runs far deeper than championships.

Lamar Hunt, founder of the Chiefs, played a pivotal role in launching Major League Soccer (MLS) after the 1994 FIFA World Cup, helping lay the foundation for the incredible growth of the sport across the United States. It is no coincidence that today, Kansas City is proudly known as America’s Soccer Capital.

That spirit of innovation continues today.

Kansas City Current became the first professional women’s football club in the world to open a stadium built exclusively for a women’s team. Every detail was designed around female athletes, sending a powerful message that women deserve facilities created specifically for them, not simply spaces adapted after the fact.

That is leadership.

That is vision.

That is heart.

I would also like to recognize Kathy Nelson, whose leadership as President and CEO of both Visit KC and the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation has been instrumental in bringing together sports, tourism, and community. Her vision, and the extraordinary work of her team, embody exactly what Kansas City stands for: collaboration, purpose, and leading from the heart.

Beyond sports, Kansas City’s identity is equally inspiring.

Its legendary jazz heritage.

Its world-famous barbecue.

The extraordinary Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, honoring the Kansas City Monarchs and reminding us that they were pioneers who helped take baseball to the world.

Its breathtaking fountains, second only to Rome worldwide.

Together, they create something truly unforgettable.

Its sports inspire you.

Its music moves you.

Its food comforts you.

Its history humbles you.

But above all…

Its people capture your heart.

The World Cup reminded me that the places we remember most are rarely the biggest.

They are the ones that make us feel something special.

Kansas City didn’t simply host matches.

It welcomed the world with open arms and reminded us that when we choose to lead with heart, extraordinary things happen.

Reflection Question

As you go through your week, ask yourself:

Are people remembering what you do, or how you make them feel?

Perhaps the greatest legacy we will ever leave is not measured by the size of our platform, our accomplishments, or our success.

It is measured by the size of our heart.

With love and gratitude,

Luisa
